Measure the waste

Automate selectively

Automate stable, rule-based, repetitive steps after the process has been simplified.

Review the result

Measure whether the redesigned process actually reduced time, cost or error. Improvement should be visible in operating metrics.

Do not optimise one step at the expense of the whole process

A department can become faster while the end-to-end customer or finance process gets slower. Measure the flow across teams and systems. The best improvement reduces total effort, delay and error rather than merely moving work somewhere else.

When automation belongs in the project

Good candidates are repetitive, rule-based, high-volume, error-prone or cross-system tasks. Poor candidates are unstable processes, highly variable judgement work or steps where the source data is unreliable.
